A North Carolina Real Estate Broker License is required of individuals who want to who perform acts of real estate services in North Carolina. Minimum Requirements to Apply for the Broker License

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be a United States citizen, a non-citizen national or a qualified alien under federal law, or have a lawful presence in the U.S. and be authorized to work in the U.S. in the real estate brokerage field.
  • Have a Social Security Number.
  • Satisfy one of the Education Qualification Options listed below:
    • Completion of the 75-hour North Carolina broker pre-licensing course.
    • Completion in another state of an equivalent real estate salesperson pre-licensing course.
    • Equivalent real estate education: the applicant must have a baccalaureate or higher degree in the field of real estate, real estate brokerage, real estate finance, real estate development, or a law degree conferred on the applicant from any college or university accredited by a college accrediting body recognized by the U. S. Department of Education.
    • Current licensure as a real estate salesperson or broker in another state.
  • File a complete application and pay all fees.
  • Pass the two-part real estate license examination.
  • Satisfy the Commission that the applicant possesses the requisite character for licensure.

The broker exam contains 80 national questions and 40 state-specific questions. You must correctly answer at least 57 of the national questions and 29 of the state-specific questions to pass.

Just because you have a criminal record, it does not mean that you will be prevented from receiving your license. It is always best to provide details on your application. If you are unsure, you can always call the commission to clarify what type of convictions are allowed, and which are not.

You are given a total of 3.5 hours for the broker exam. You are are allowed 120 minutes (2 hours) for the national portion and 90 minutes (1.5 hours) for the state portion, for a total of 210 minutes (3.5 hours).
