Individuals who perform acts of real estate services in Iowa must be licensed by the Real Estate Commission. A salesperson license gives you the ability to work in the office of a real estate broker as an employee or independent contractor. For the purposes of the License Professor, a salesperson is similar to sales agents in other states.   • Must be 18 years of age - no residency or citizenship requirement.
  • Must be sponsored by broker after they pass the exam; cannot apply for an inactive license.
  • Complete the 60-hour pre-license course from an approved provider.
  • Successfully pass the state and national portions of the examination.
  • Undergo a criminal history and background investigation.
  • Obtain errors and omissions insurance.

An Iowa Real Estate Broker License is required of individuals who want to who perform acts of real estate services in Iowa. A broker license would allow you to operate your own real estate business or act as a broker for a corporation or partnership.   • A broker applicant must have 24 months of active salesperson experience and complete 72 hours of broker pre-license education within the preceding 24 months
  • Successfully pass the state and national portions of the examination

  • Include current wall certificate with the application
  • Brokers who have never renewed as a salesperson must provide documentation of attendance of the following three courses: 12 hours buying practices, 12 hours listing practices and 12 hours developing professionalism and ethical practices

The salesperson exam contains 80 national questions and 40 state-specific questions. You must correctly answer 70% to pass. This would mean at least 56 of the national questions and 28 of the state-specific questions to pass.

The broker exam contains 80 national questions and 40 state-specific questions. You must correctly answer 75% to pass. This would mean at least 60 of the national questions and 30 of the state-specific questions to pass.

Just because you have a criminal record, it does not mean that you will be prevented from receiving your license. It is always best to provide details on your application. If you are unsure, you can always call the commission to clarify what type of convictions are allowed, and which are not.
