How to get a Salesperson License

A Salesperson must be licensed to act on behalf of a licensed Minnesota Broker, and may not be licensed to act on behalf of more than one licensed Minnesota Broker during the same period of time. The license of each Salesperson shall be mailed to and remain in the possession of the licensed Minnesota Broker with whom the Salesperson is affiliated until the Salesperson ends affiliation with the Broker. The term of a Salesperson license is two years, expiring on June 30. Application forms are available by clicking on the links below.

Salesperson License - Minnesota Resident
The following must be submitted for a Salesperson license:

  1. Completed license application and BCA form
  2. $100 Salesperson License fee (License fee is $110 if subdivided land is added) No cash. Check or money order payable to MN Dept of Commerce.
  3. Attach Course Completion Certificates for pre-licensing Course 1, Course 2, and Course 3. Applicant must have passed Course 1 prior to taking the salesperson examination. Course 2 and Course 3 may be completed before or after taking the examination.
  4. Attach original passing results for the 2-part written salesperson examination (National and Minnesota State Laws). Exam bulletins and registration are available at www.experioronline.com or 1-800-490-6523.
    No part of the written exam may be more than one year old at the time of application for licensure. If application for the salesperson license is not submitted within one year of exam, Applicant must re-take Course 1 and then re-take the 2-part written exam.
  5. The Salesperson applicant must be affiliated with a licensed Minnesota Broker (Corporate Broker, or Partnership Broker, or Individual Proprietor Broker), and the Broker must sign the Salesperson application. The Salesperson must remain affiliated with a licensed Minnesota Broker to maintain an active license.

How to get a Broker License

The term of a Broker license is two years, expiring on June 30. Application forms are available by clicking on the links below.

Individual Broker License - Resident
The following must be submitted for an individual Broker license:

  1. Completed Broker license application and BCA form.
  2. $180 Broker License fee (License fee is $190 if subdivided land is added). No cash. Check or money order payable to MN Dept of Commerce.
  3. Applicant must have 2 years of Minnesota licensed Salesperson experience within the five years prior to the date of application for a Broker license.
  4. Applicants who meet the requirements for a waiver of the 2-year Salesperson experience may submit a Request for Waiver form to the Commerce Department prior to taking Broker course and Broker exam and submitting Broker application. If waiver is approved, attach copy of Department approval letter with Broker application.
  5. Attach Course Completion Certificate for Minnesota Broker course. Broker course may be no more than one year old at the time of application for a Broker license.
  6. Attach Course Completion Certificates documenting that the applicant has completed all Salesperson continuing education due as of the date of the Broker application. The Broker course may be counted toward required Salesperson continuing education if the Broker course was taken during the license period that the continuing education was due.
  7. Attach original passing results for the 2-part written Broker examination (National and Minnesota State Laws). Exam bulletins and registration are available at www.experioronline.com or 1-800-490-6523. No part of the written exam may be more than one year old at the time of application for a Broker license, unless the individual has remained continuously licensed as a Salesperson prior to taking the Broker exam and submitting the application for a Broker license.
  8. A Broker is required to maintain an interest-bearing trust account.
  9. If the Broker meets the requirements for a Trust Account Waiver, a completed Trust Account Waiver form may be attached to the Broker Application, in place of obtaining a trust account.
  10. If the applicant intends to be affiliated with a Broker that currently holds a Minnesota Broker license, the Primary Broker of the licensed Broker must sign the application confirming the affiliation of the individual Broker applicant, and the application must include a bank officer signature for the trust account held by the currently licensed Broker.
  11. If the individual Broker applicant is an individual proprietor, attach copy of Certificate of Assumed Name, filed and stamped by the MN Secretary of State, if Business Name is different from Legal Name of the Individual. This requirement applies to an individual proprietor who intends to do business using a company name that does not include the individual's first and last name. Information about filing for a Certificate of Assumed Name may be obtained from the Secretary of State www.sos.state.mn.us , 180 State Office Building, 100 Constitution Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55155, telephone 651-296-2803.
  12. A bank official must sign the Individual Proprietor Broker application, certifying that a trust account has been established in the legal name of the Individual Proprietor Broker, as shown on the Broker license.
  13. If the individual Broker applicant is not an Individual Proprietor, the applicant must attach a completed Broker Company application with the individual Broker application.
