How to obtain an Indiana Real Estate License

In the State of Indiana, exams, licensing, and continuing education for real estate agents are governed by the Indiana Real Estate Commission.
There are two basic real estate licenses in Indiana, a broker's license and a salesperson's license. Generally, a salesperson's license allows the holder to sell real estate only under the auspices of a licensed broker. (Salesperson's licenses are generally what people refer to when they say they have a real estate license.)
To obtain the salesperson's license, a person must:
  • be at least 18 years of age and a resident of the United States
  • has never, either directly or through a corporation or other entity, had a professional or business license suspended or revoked
  • have not been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony
  • have successfully completed courses in the principles, practices, and law of real estate, totaling eight (8) semester credit hours, or their equivalent, as a student at an accredited college or university or have successfully completed an approved salesperson course
  • Apply for a license by submitting the application fee prescribed by the commission and an application
  • Pass a written examination prepared and administered by the commission or its duly appointed agent
  • Submit not more than one year after passing the written examination
To obtain the broker's license, a person must:
  • be at least 18 years of age and a resident of the United States
  • has never, either directly or through a corporation or other entity, had a professional or business license suspended or revoked
  • have not been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony
  • has had an active Indiana salesperson's license for one year (this may be waived by the commission upon a finding of equivalent experience)
  • have successfully completed an approved broker course of study
  • Apply for a license by submitting the application fee prescribed by the commission and an application
  • Pass a written examination prepared and administered by the commission or its duly appointed agent
  • Submit not more than one year after passing the written examination
