HOW TO OBTAIN A HAWAIIAN REAL ESTATE LICENSE

In the State of Hawaii, exams, licensing, and continuing education for real estate agents are governed by the Hawaiian Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. There are two basic real estate licenses in Hawaii, a broker's license and a salesperson's license.

To obtain the salesperson's license, a person must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Possess a reputation for or record of competency, honesty, truthfulness, financial integrity and fair dealing.
  • All applicants must complete the appropriate Commission approved pre-license course before the date of the examination, or apply for and obtain a "Pre-licensing Education Equivalency – Real Estate"
  • After meeting the education and/or experience requirements, pass the licensing examination.

To obtain the broker's license, a person must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Possess a reputation for or record of competency, honesty, truthfulness, financial integrity and fair dealing.
  • Not have been convicted of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude.
  • Hold a current, unencumbered Hawaii real estate salesperson license, or a current, unencumbered real estate salesperson or broker license in another state or jurisdiction recognized by the Association of Real Estate License Law Officials, with an equivalent real estate licensing law as determined by the commission
  • Has experience as a full-time Hawaii-licensed real estate salesperson associated with a Hawaii-licensed real estate broker for at least three (3) years of the five-year period
  • After meeting the education and/or experience requirements, pass the licensing examination.

EQUIVALENCY TO PRELICENSING EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
The pre-licensing education requirement may be satisfied by obtaining a Pre-licensing Education Equivalency – Real Estate certificate from the Commission for applicants who satisfy one of the categories listed below. An application for "Pre-licensing Education Equivalency – Real Estate," must be submitted on the form provided by the Commission, with supporting documents and a non refundable fee, prior to applying for examination.
